Hands on sessions in the annex's production suite, mixing a student's own recordings on a real desk, not a demonstration.

The production suite in the annex has a compact mixing desk, three studio monitors and a dedicated recording booth, and the second film's studio shots, a student turning one knob at a time while Reuben watches rather than reaches over, are what a normal session looks like. Sessions are booked individually or as a small group and cover recording, basic editing and a rough mix of a student's own take, whether that is a solo instrument, a vocal, or a full band recording from the room next door.

Step by step, in this order

45 to 90 minute sessions, booked individually or as a group. You always know which part you're on.

  2. 02 Recording made in the booth or direct from the band room
  3. 03 Student sits at the desk with Reuben for the mix, hands on the faders
  4. 04 Rough mix bounced and checked together
  5. 05 Finished file sent home the same week

Do you need to already be a Chilwell student to book a session?

No, though most bookings are from students already taking lessons here. A stand alone recording session is open to anyone who wants their own material mixed properly.

Who actually touches the desk?

The student does, mostly. Reuben points and explains rather than mixing it for them, which is slower but means they leave knowing what a fader and a compressor actually do.

What format do we get the finished file in?

A standard audio file suitable for streaming platforms or just keeping. We do not master for vinyl or CD pressing.
