Violin, viola, cello and double bass lessons that lead into the Tuesday afternoon string ensemble, in the hall's high ceilinged ensemble room.

The ensemble hall is the grandest room on the property, arched windows down both sides, a concert harp kept in the corner for advanced students and for hire at exam time, and enough floor space for a twelve piece string group to sit in a proper semicircle. Damon teaches individual violin, viola, cello and double bass lessons through the week and conducts the ensemble itself on Tuesday afternoons, which is what the third and fourth shots of the first film show: bow arms moving together, one section at a time, until a phrase actually locks in.

Individual lessons

Individual lesson, per lesson, billed for the term (10 lessons). Ensemble participation is billed separately as a term package once a student is placed.

02How it runs

Step by step, in this order

30, 45 or 60 minute individual lessons, plus a 90 minute Tuesday ensemble rehearsal for enrolled students. You always know which part you're on.

  1. 01 Trial lesson to confirm instrument and current level
  2. 02 Weekly individual slot confirmed for the term
  3. 03 Ensemble placement once technique and reading are solid, usually after a year or so
  4. 04 Tuesday afternoon rehearsals alongside the individual lesson
  5. 05 Performance opportunity at the twice yearly recital

Does my child need to own a violin or cello?

No. We hire fractional sized instruments by the term, which matters more for strings than any other instrument because children grow out of a full sized one long before they are ready for it.

How does a student get into the ensemble?

Damon places students once technique and reading are steady enough to keep up in a group, usually after a year of individual lessons. There is no audition, just a conversation about readiness.

Is the harp available for lessons?

The harp is kept for our more advanced strings students and for hire at exam time, not as a beginner instrument. Ask Damon if your child is interested.
